Lost Alumni

If you or someone you know is not on our list, it is only because we don’t have the current address. Please let us know.

 ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIPS

The current Alumni Scholarship Committee consists of Joel Daniels, Chr., Joan Deardorff, Sec., Roger Engle, Treas, Bev Ferguson, Ardeth Woods, Julie Gulikson, Keith Jensen and Byron Schriever.

The committee is very pleased to announce the receipt of over $90,000 from the estate of Dorothy Damm Waiste ’31. She thought fondly of her years at Molalla and we are so grateful to be remembered. A scholarship will be awarded each year in her name.

We also acknowledge a $10,000 donation by Dean and Ardeth Woods. She was in the class of ’55 and we will make an award each year called the Sanden-Trullinger Scholarship.

Last year $7,000 was awarded to:

Adam Bernert ($1,000)

Kaylee Crosby ($1,000)

Julia Midkiff ($1,000)

Sarah Haqq ($1,500)

Marshall Roses ($1,500)

Richard E. and Mary E. Marquardt

Scholarship:

Holly Pribble ($1,000)

Alumni Scholarship Fund

The committee would like to encourage you to remember the Alumni Scholarship Fund in your estate planning. It is their intention to honor any gift or bequest of $10,000 or more by establishing a scholarship in that person’s name. Please consider making a donation to the fund as you complete and mail your registration for the luncheon. Another way you can give is when the basket is passed during the luncheon (over $1,300 was collected last year!).

In other scholarship news, we want to call attention to two major scholarships being funded by Molalla Alumni. Terry Holden ‘68 is awarding a 4-year scholarship which is now supporting 4 students in 4-year institutions. He is involved in the selection committee and has direct contact with the recipients. He reports that it has been a most rewarding endeavor. He is very proud of “his kids.” The other is the Holman Family Molalla High School Alumni Scholarship Fund. (see next page)

The Holman Family Molalla High School Alumni Scholarship Fund

The Honorable Ralph Holman, retired Supreme Court Justice for Oregon, established a fund at The Oregon Community Foundation to provide scholarships to graduates of Molalla High School, his alma mater.

The fund awarded its first scholarship to Katherine Bauer, for the 2006-2007 academic year. Katherine is attending Occidental College in California. She said it meant a great deal to her that the scholarship committee saw her potential and wished to help with her education. The Holman scholarship has helped ease her financial fears.

He started life in the small, rural community of Meadowbrook, three miles northeast of Molalla, Oregon, and graduated from Molalla High School 75 years ago. There was no money for college, but he was able to attend what was then an unaccredited night law school in Portland, now the Northwestern Law School at Lewis & Clark College.

He began practicing law in 1937, but interrupted his career to enlist in the Navy during World War II. After his discharge in 1946 he returned to practicing law until 1950, when he was appointed a circuit judge for Clackamas County. Fifteen years later he was elected to the Supreme Court of Oregon. He retired in 1980, after 30 years to the day as a judge.

Judge Holman said his family always placed a high value on education. He said:

I am of the belief that no democracy will work without an educated public and that each of us, if possible, should leave something in repayment for the opportunities this country has afforded us.

Alumni Association Bylaws

A committee, chaired by Byron Schriever, ‘48, has been meeting to prepare a set of bylaws for the Molalla Alumni Association. They are included in this newletter (below) and will be presented for ratification at our Annual Meeting following the luncheon on April, 26, 2008. The Scholarship Committee’s bylaws, adopted last year, are being folded into the new set of bylaws for the parent organization. This will provide for a more orderly ongoing association that should thrive for many more years.

The drafting committee will also solicit nominees for the Board of Directors who will be elected at the Annual Meeting. Please let us know if that would be of interest to you. You are always welcome to help out.
